    Gloria Schlaefli|May 25, 2023

Memorial Day will soon be here. It is a day of remembering and honoring those that are no longer with us as we visit cemeteries and memorial statues. Flowers and flags are left at grave sites of soldiers and veterans who died, and at the grave sites of loved ones including family members, and friends we still think of and remember. Fond memories as a youngster, of my parents taking my sisters and me to visit cemeteries where some of our ancestors were buried. As we all stood looking at each grave stone, my father would tell us what he...

  • Editor's Notebook

    Bill Blauvelt|May 25, 2023

Saturday afternoon, Jeff Barnes, a Humanities Nebraska public speaker, will make a presentation about Jesse James in Nebraska at the Nuckolls County Museum located in Superior’s City Park. We haven’t heard his presentation and we doubt he will either confirm nor put to rest the stories about the James brothers Nuckolls County connections. However, we want to hear what he has to say. After learning the 2023 Lady Vestey Festival theme was picked to honor the late Lew Hunter, we recalled a story Lew told about his mother’s family and the James gan...

  • Ask a Pastor Column

    May 25, 2023

Q: Do angels really have wings in heaven? A: I think this is a great question because it opens up one of many mysteries that await believers when we transition from this physical life into our eternal existence (I Corinthians 13:12). Angels are wonderful and amazing creations of God (Hebrews 1:7), separate from man and currently existing in a higher position in God’s hierarchy (Psalm 8:5). One of the things I find most fascinating about angels is they seem to be able to appear in different forms. We have numerous accounts of angels appearing n...

    Allen Ostdiek|May 25, 2023

It’s funny how things work out! I’ve always had a desire to travel to Canada and tour the country. No special reason, just thought it would be enjoyable to see it. Well, I’ve gotten to the point where I was sure I’d never see it. However, last week, Canada came to visit me and millions of others throughout the American mid-west in the form of smoke from forest or prairie fires in the northwest part of that country. Frankly, I could have done without the opportunity. Tuesday, we had appointments in Hastings and when we left Lawrence, the sky...

  • Love my crazy life

    Teraesa Bruce|May 25, 2023

I had the strangest dream last night. I was sitting at my kitchen counter typing away like I always do. Then I got up from my chair and was standing on the pool deck, garden hose in hand, washing away. Mary, Kayrn, Marty, and Clinton, my coworkers from The Express, were all doing various pool duties, and Mary kept asking me what to do next. I then walked into the pool office, which became The Express office and started stuffing papers. I don’t even stuff papers in real life! I woke up exhausted! It’s been a rough week, actually it’s been a rou...

  • Superior pool plans opening Tuesday

    May 25, 2023

Swimming season is almost here. It appears the Superior Municipal Pool will miss the traditional Memorial Day opening but not by much. Earlier this week the pool was being filled in anticipation of opening on Tuesday which is May 30. It isn’t that the opening date for the pool has changed, It is the fact that the Memorial Day date has changed. For many years Memorial Day was observed on May 30 and May 30 was pool opening day. But now Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May. This year the pool will offer lap swimming from 12 to 1 a...

  • Museum program will feature Superior's Jesse James story

    May 25, 2023

The late Howard Crilly, became publisher of The Superior Express in the 1930s and had the opportunity to talk with many of the early day residents of Superior. Though he was never able to prove their claim, he said those early residents had assured him the notorious Jesse James had a sister living in Superior and other family members in the Nelson community and he had frequently visited Superior before he was brought down by an assassin’s bullet in 1882. That story is somewhat surprising as Superior was open prairie before the town’s est...

  • former Student remembers Lew Hunter

    May 25, 2023

To know Lew Hunter was to know a force of nature. (The same can be said for his wife, Pamela!) I first learned this in 2007 or 2008 when I saw them at an event put on by the Omaha Film Festival. (I re-learned that lesson every time I was lucky enough to be around them.) We were in a classroom at UNO. Around the desk and whiteboard, Lew had placed a slew of “storytellers,” toys and figurines that could inspire a story. After we learned a bit of the writing craft, we each had to submit three ideas for possible screenplays and Lew would help us...

The Odessa Cemetery is located on Road K in western Jewell County. Nestled within the confines of the cemetery is the family plot of Thomas Lewis Watson. While the Watson name may not be a familiar one outside of Sherlock Holmes novels, a Watson family member played a pivotal role in one of the most egregious acts of violence committed in the American West. Thomas was born in Scotland in 1836. He emigrated to the United States as a boy. His family moved from Ohio to Ontario, Canada. Here he married Frances Close. The couple moved to Lebanon in...

    May 25, 2023

With more people traveling during the summer months, the Kansas Department of Transportation reminds motorists of the importance of wearing seat belts every time they are in a vehicle. “Many people believe they’re safe without a seat belt in a larger vehicle, such as a pickup truck, or if they’re traveling on rural roads,” said Calvin Reed, acting secretary. “Statistics show this isn’t true. Wick,, Post Rock District crop production agent. Unfortunately, like all producers, the wheat crop has had many challenging things this year, so it just is looking pretty rough and very thin and short. The wheat tour day will only have two stops because of the poor wheat stands with limited growth. Many wheat fields have been released through insurance. The first stop will be...

  • Nelson has its own Betsy Ross

    DeAnna Tuttle|May 25, 2023

Throughout history, Elizabeth (Betsy) Griscom Ross has been credited with sewing the first American flag and with helping George Washington finish the red, white and blue design. It is believed that Betsy was chosen to complete this task because George Ross, an uncle of her deceased husband John (the first of her three husbands), was a flag committee member. While the original flag, called the Grand Union or Continental Colors, no longer exists, a replica is on display at the Betsy Ross house in Philadelphia. Since formal adoption as the flag...

  • Sen. Murman: Helping deliver conservative victories for LD38 and Nebraska

    May 25, 2023

In November, constituents in Legislative District 38 renewed the mandate I took to Lincoln the first time: to cut property taxes, to defend our constitutional rights, to protect the life and health of the born and unborn, and to promote transparency in government. I’m excited to say that the 108th Nebraska Legislature has made monumental steps towards all of these goals. Beginning with property taxes, as a member of the revenue committee, I was able to help shepherd LB783 into the revenue committee’s property tax priority bill. LB783 rem...
