Robert Stephen “Steve” Heil, 71, died Jan. 13, at Providence Place Memory Care, Hastings.

Services with military rites by A.L. Shirley Post 176 were at 2:30 p.m., Jan. 17, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Blue Hill with Pastor Leah Krotz officiating. Book signing was from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home in Hastings. Memorials may be given to the family to establish a remembrance of Steve that will be displayed at Crystal Lake Recreation Area, Ayr. Private condolences may be sent to the family at http://www.lbvfh.com. Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home & Cremation Center was in charge of the arrangements.

Steve was born July 21, 1948, in Nelson, to George and Helen (Schiermeyer) Heil. He graduated from Lawrence High School. Steve served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971. He married Sheryl on July 21, 1977, in Glenvil.

Steve owned a roofing business for more than 30 years. He retired after 15 years from the U.S. Postal Service in 2009. He attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Blue Hill. Steve was chairman of the Ayr Village Board for many years and managed Crystal Lake Recreation Area. Steve enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He also volunteered as a youth fishing instructor for the Game and Parks Commission.


Steve was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bill Heil; and sister, Mary Myer.

Survivors are his wife, Sheryl Heil, Ayr; daughters and their spouses, Dawnette and Brian Kahnk, Omaha, Rachelle and Scott DeBord, Blair; grandchildren, Erin Kahnk, Tyler Norman, Tanner Norman, Samantha DeBord; step-grandchildren ,: Shandra DeBord, Ginger Darveau; step-great-grandchildren; four siblings and spouse, Janet Cassatt, O’Fallon, Mo., Richard Heil, Hastings, Dennis Heil, Hastings, Dorothy and Tom Simpson, Lincoln, Neb .; many nieces, nephews and friends.
