DeWayne Schilling

DeWayne Donald Schilling, 93, of Deshler, died at Heritage Care Center in Fairbury Jan. 18. He was born on April 16, 1926, in Ogallala, to parents, Paul and Frieda Schilling. He was one of nine siblings.

DeWayne is survived by his daughter, Linda McCoy of Deshler and son, Gary Schilling of Englewood, Colo. DeWayne has three grandchildren: granddaughter, Mrs. Jeff (Misty) Feightner of Temecula, Calif .; granddaughter, Mrs. Tim (Melissa) Steele of Vandergrift, Penn .; and grandson, Brent McCoy of Linden, N.C. DeWayne enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17. He remained in the service for four years. After the navy, he did construction work for a few years. He married Joyce Hillman whom he met on a blind date July 3, 1950. They lived in Hastings for a few years working at the ammunition plants. He then moved his family to Denver where he worked at Sealtest Dairy for 14 years and then retired from Wonder Bread after 18 years. He moved back to Deshler in 1989. DeWayne enjoyed taking his long walks and traveling the United States and Canada with Joyce. He also liked gambling with his nephew, Keith Hillman.


A graveside funeral was held Jan.24, at St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery in Deshler with Pastor Brian Francik officiating. Casket bearers were Megan Engdahl, Logan Feightner, Haleigh Feightner, Zachary Michaels, Donovan Michaels and Jase McCoy. Honorary

casket bearers were DeWayne’s six great-grandchildren.
