It is said all good things must end. So it was for the D-2 Lawrence-Nelson girls basketball team who saw their season long 21 game undefeated streak come to a screeching halt at the hands of C-2 Superior, 77-34, at Nelson, Friday. It was the final regular season game for both teams.

Both teams entered sub-district play Tuesday with game results unavailable at press time. Number 2 seed Lawrence-Nelson played Nebraska Christian at Grand Island Central Catholic in Grand Island.

Superior played the winner of Monday’s Thayer Central-Sandy Creek game at Fairbury.

Superior used its height advantage to deny the Raiders any kind of inside game. The Wildcats controlled the boards as well negating the quickness which Lawrence-Nelson relied upon throughout the season. Add in the torrid three-point shooting by Superior and the Raiders were totally outgunned.

Superior jumped out to a 22-6 first quarter lead and was never challenged. They held a 38-14 lead at the half and the game was essentially over. The Wildcats opened up a 61-28 lead with one quarter of play remaining. The Wildcats did not let up putting up 16 points in the final frame while the Raiders managed 5, to be handed their first loss of the season, 77-34.

Kalynn Meyer led the Superior scoring charge with 23 points. Shayla Meyer poured through 21 points. Trisha Hayes contributed 18 points. Sierra Blackburn netted six points. Emma Schnakenberg posted four points. Neah McMeen tallied three points. Zaveah Kobza scored two points. K. Meyer grabbed 16 rebounds. Hayes secured 10 rebounds for the Wildcats. Hallie Miller and S. Meyer acquired three rebounds apiece. Ella Gardner and Atlee Kobza nabbed two rebounds apiece. Noelle McMeen and Z. Kobza landed a rebound each.

Taylor Harrington put up 18 points for Lawrence-Nelson. Karigan Drudik and Annie McCartney hit for three points each. McCartney pulled away five rebounds. Drudik nabbed two rebounds. Hallie Epley and Emily Miller scored two points apiece. Epley nailed five rebounds while E. Miller had one. Allison Miller landed four rebounds. Emma Epley collected three rebounds. Elsa Jorgensen gathered up two rebounds.

Should both teams win their Tuesday games, they will play for the sub-district winner spot today (Thursday) for the opportunity to go onto district play. Both teams were in the sixth position of their wildcard point lists.
