"Jewell - We Have A Story To Tell." One story, from the beginning of Jewell's history, tells of a pioneer, Billy Street, walking out on the prairie and climbing to the top of Scarborough Hill. The hill, west of Jewell, is named after another early settler James Scarborough. Street was afforded quite a view. A view of a valley full of buffalo. Thus, the name, Buffalo Valley.

Four fiberglass buffalo (bison) will be coming to Jewell as part of the community's Sesquicentennial celebration. The statues are being made possible by a Dane G Hansen grant. The project has been led by Gaye Daniels and Shelby Bohnert.

As many may know, the buffalo Street saw were not true buffalo but actually bison. However, to this day, most call the large shaggy animals, buffalo and not their scientifically correct name, bison.

Large and shaggy they are. Adults can be 6 1⁄2 feet tall, 11 feet long and weigh over a ton.

Four of them are coming back to the Buffalo Valley! Thanks to a Dane G. Hansen grant, four fiberglass versions of the large animals will arrive in Jewell in a few months. Dedication of the statues will be one of the events held during Jewell's annual Corn Show event in October.

Obtaining the statues is part of Jewell's Sesquicentennial Celebration. They will remind visitors and citizens that Jewell has been part of the Buffalo Valley for 150 years. Spearheading the effort to "bring the buffalo back" are Gaye Daniels and Shelby Bohnert.
