Superior Elementary celebrated Read Across America from March 2 through 13. The national event was started in 1997 by the National Education Association in conjunction with the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel on March 2. Geisel, more commonly known as Dr. Seuss, authored more than 60 children's books. He also was an American artist, political cartoonist, animator and book publisher.

Activities for the event encouraged children to read. Superior Elementary included DEAR (drop everything and read) to their daily schedule. Students were alerted it was DEAR time when Mr. Hoins played a theme song for a Cat in the Hat cartoon. The songs were played randomly at two different times during the day. When the song began, all staff and students stopped what they were doing and read for 10 minutes. Students were required to have a book with them everywhere they went during school except during lunch.

The six days of the celebration each had a theme for dress up. March 2 was Mustache Day for the Lorax. March 3 was Super Hero Day for Horton Hears a Who. Crazy Hair-Hat Day was the theme for Whacky Wednesday, March 4. Themes continued when students returned Wednesday after spring break. March 11 was Stripes Day for Cat in the Hat. Thursday was Favorite Book Character Day. Characters did not have to be from a Dr. Seuss book. The last day was Pajama Day for a Sleep Book. The celebration concluded with a carnival from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Friday in the elementary gymnasium. Each class made up a carnival game for the occasion. Members of the high school student council set up and were in charge of the games. Prizes, popcorn and a bouncy house for students were provided by the school.

Homeroom doors were decorated specially for Dr. Seuss week. The winning homeroom class received a set of books for the classroom. Students could estimate the candy orange slices in the library when they were there for class. Estimates were written on a mustache taped to a Lorax in the commons area.

It was an exciting week allowing for students and adults alike to enjoy time with books. Committee members who planned events for the week were Sonia West, Kara Smith, Luke Walz, Krisha Scott, Nancy Haas and Sara Fuller.
