Arson blamed for motor grader fire

Jewell County law enforcement continues to investigate an apparent case of arson which was first reported to the office at 2:52 a.m. the morning of April 2.

A fire was apparently set in Ionia which damaged a county-owned motor grader. Shortly after the first report, the sheriff’s office received another call reported a silver Dodge flatbed pickup was involved in two motor vehicle accidents north of Ionia.

Upon investigation it was determined the two crimes were committed by the same individual.

The suspected truck was found on a property north of Ionia. An injured male suspect was found in a barn on the property. He was arrested and taken to the Jewell County Hospital for treatment.

He has since been charged with arson, theft, three counts of aggravated assault, 5 counts of criminal damage and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was confined to the Jewell County Jail. Bond was set at $10,000.
