Club discusses Burr Oak's July 4th celebration

Peggy Wilson, chairman of the Burr Oak Community Club, called the June 4, meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. outside the Grate Expectations Cafe. The minutes of the March 5, meeting were approved as read. Jessica Barnes, treasurer, reported the account balance was $5,458.41. The only expense was for $49 for advertising in March.

Old business consisted of reviewing six scholarship applications from Rock Hills High School Seniors. After everyone had reviewed the scholarships, voting by ballot took place.  Recipients of the 2020 Burr Oak Community Scholarships will be Sam Underwood and Jaclyn Yelken.  Glenny Barnes prepare the certificates to send to the high school counselor.

A lengthy discussion was held concerning the Independence Day Celebration scheduled for July 5.  A show of hands was called for to continue as in the past with a hot dog supper, homemade ice cream and fireworks. Those in favor of continuing as usual outnumbered those not in favor.  More discussion followed, and a second show of hands was called for. This time those in favor of just having fireworks were in the majority. It was decided to begin the fireworks at about 9 p.m. with spectators being able to park and watch from their vehicles or with social distancing in lawn chairs or sitting on the ground. The Community Center will not be open. Posters will be made and an ad will be put in the newspaper.

The next Community Club meeting will be at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 3 at the Grate Expectations Cafe.

Attending were Peggy Wilson, Cheryl Hillman, Bob Hines, Mary Foley, Nick and Kelley Bunting, Cliff and Glenny Barnes, Brynlee Manning, Jessica Barnes, Penny Turner and Renita Volker.
