Area residents know a good thing when they see it and the City of Superior business stimulus program was quickly recognized as a good deal. Under the plan a shopper could purchase a certificate for $25 that was valued at $37.50 by participating businesses. The city pledged to contribute $25,000 in the sales tax revenue to the program.

Two thousand certificates were printed which means the shoppers contributed $50,000, the city $25,000 and the businesses received $75,000, provided all the certificates were sold. Donors contributed an additional $2,500 to assist the program.

The first day the certificates were on sale, two-thirds of the allocated $25,000 was used. The fund was soon depleted on the second day. The program had many provisions including ones that limited how many certificates a participating business could receive.

Within the first hour after the certificates went on sale, the maximum number had been sold for Ace Hardware, Kenny’s Lumber and Ideal Market.
