Kyle Railroad working on the line

They are working on the railroad. The shortline railroad that operates the former Rock Island Railroad line across the center of Jewell County is seeking improvements to the track. Some 20,000 new ties along with ballast are being installed between Scandia and Lebanon and the line is being resurfaced.

The line’s Republican River bridge between Scandia and Courtland which has been out of service for several years is to be reopened later this year. Repair of the bridge is expected to cost more than $1 million.

When the bridge is back in service, the railroad will be able to reopen its Yuma line. With the Yuma line back in service, additional traffic is expected.

The Kansas Department of Transportation has awarded the railroad $2.3 million to replace 4.5 miles of rail between Beloit and Glen Elder. The 115 pound welded rail will replace the current 85 pound rail.

Republic County had requested the dismantling of a bridge which allowed the railroad to serve Munden. The track is currently inactive but railroad officials have said they want to leave the bridge in place as the track is sometimes used.

In recent weeks the 1,400 cars the railroad had stored on the line between Scandia and Norway were removed while the number of cars stored between Munden and Belleville increased.
