SHS graduation at 10 Saturday

The 133rd annual Superior High School commencement exercise originally planned for May 9 will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the high school gym.

Several adjustments have been made to comply with the current pandemic advice.

While the high school gym will normally hold 1, 200 people, to comply with the social distancing requirement, only 510 people will be allowed in the gym on Saturday.

Thirty-seven members of the Class of 2020 are expected to attend. The international students are among those who will not be attending.

Fourteen members of the school faculty and staff plus three local photographers employed by the school will be in attendance.

This allows space for 429 people who will form “Parties of Guests.” A party of guest is defined as members of a household who live together and may be seated together.

Each graduate has been allowed to invite 11 immediate family members. This potentially could include grandparents but because of the elevated risk for the elderly, the school is discouraging the older family members from attending.

All students were to submit the names of whom would be included in their party of guests to the school by Friday. However only 27 of the 37 graduates did so.

Each party of guests will sit in a predetermined area and will be at least six feet away from the other parties.

The ceremony will be streamed live on the school’s Striv Internet channel and will be posted on the Striv website following the ceremony.

All graduates, faculty and staff will be provided masks but the wearing of masks will be optional.

All graduates, faculty and staff will wash their hands and use hand sanitizer upon entering the building.

The graduates are to attend a practice session at 7 p.m. today (Thursday).

Chairs for the graduates will be organized in 4 rows of 10 chairs on the gym floor. The graduates are to maintain the six-foot separation at all times while on the school property.

The school will not have a designated area for the delivery of cards. Cards are to be delivered to the graduates homes, either before or after the ceremony.

Graduates are to come to the school dressed in their caps and gowns. They will meet in the junior high gym at 9:30.

Graduates will enter the gym through the west door in a single line.

Diplomas will be presented by the board president who will be wearing latex gloves.

A professional photographer will take a picture of each graduate before they leave the stage. Other people will not be allowed to take pictures on the school grounds. Gatherings will not be allowed on the school grounds before or after the ceremony.
