Blue Green Algae warning for Lovewell Lake

August 20, 2020

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has revised their list of public health advisories for Kansas lakes because of blue-green algae. Lovewell Reservoir has now been determined to be in a warning.

This warning means the lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock and water contact should be avoided. Even though it is suggested to wash your skin as soon as possible after contact, fishing is still allowed. You are able to eat the fish as long as you rinse them with clean water and only eat the fillet portion. Do not allow pets to eat dried algae and avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.

Blue-green algae blooms are unpredictable and can develop rapidly. Blooms may float around the lake requiring visitors to exercise their best judgment.

If there is scum, a paint-like surface or the water is bright green, avoid contact and keep pets away. Pet owners should be aware animals that swim or drink water affected by the harmful algal bloom, or eat dried algae along the shore, may become seriously ill or die.
