Red Raiders Cross Country continue to improve times

October 1, 2020

Thursday, Sept. 10, the South Central Red Raiders Cross Country team ran in Fairbury. It was a cool and damp day for a run. The boys took eighth place at this meet. Pictured is Alex Miller who placed 63rd at the Fairbury Cross Country invite with a time of 27:49.

Cross country is a sport where teams and individuals run a race on open-air courses over natural terrain. The course may include grass and dirt surfaces, pass through woodlands and open country, and include hills and flat ground. It is both an individual and a team sport; runners are judged on individual times and teams by a points-scoring method. Cross country usually occurs in the fall and can include weather conditions of rain, sleet, snow or hail, and a wide range of temperatures.

The Red Raiders cross country team is a collaboration of Lawrence-Nelson and Sandy Creek students. The team is lead by Coach Randi Fox of Nelson. Mrs. Fox also teaches second grade at Lawrence. The Red Raiders cross country assistant coach is Molly Schoof. She teaches English at Sandy Creek.

The Fillmore Central Invite was held on Sept. 17. This meet has become competitive. Many say this is what the districts and state competitions will be like. Brayton Jarosik was our only medalist this meet. He ran an incredible race. The top 47 boys all ran under 20 minutes. Every single runner at this meet had a personal best from a year ago. I am excited to see where the runners are with their fitness.

For girls varsity, Alex Miller placed at 57th with a time of 27:34, and Jessica Himmelberg placed at 60th with a time of 30:26.

Boys varsity received 10th place at this meet with 167 points. Brayton Jarosik medaled at this meet with a time of 17:37 and coming in at 9th place. Logan Menke placed 43rd with a time of 19:38, Theo Kathman placed 60th with a time of 21:10, Jacob Hagemeier placed 67th with a time of 22:26, Itzamna Diaz placed 69th with a time of 22:35, Ayden West placed 79th with a time of 26:39.

Ayden West ran his first cross country meet ever in Fairbury, September 10, and was excited with his finish. West completed the course with a time of 26:39.

The Thayer Central Cross Country Invite was Sept. 24. It was a hot and humid day in Hebron! I thought the participants ran well despite the tough weather and tough competition. The runners are continuing to lower their times. I look forward to the coming weeks to see how well they do. The runners are not done with this course, as they will run it again today (Thursday) at the TVC meet.

Teagan Jarosik brought home 21st place for the Red Raiders at this meet with a time of 25:27. The boys placed 6 out of 9 with 102 points. Brayton Jarosik came in 6th with a time of 18:03, and Logan Menke came in at 19th place with a time of 19:14. Both boys medaled at this meet. Jacob Hagemeier placed 47th with a time of 22:32, Itzamna Diaz ranked 48th with a time of 22:36, and Zach Brennfoerder placed 71st with a time of 27:53.

Today (Thursday) the Red Raiders will travel to Hebron Country Club for the TVC meet. We would like to thank Coach Fox for sending the results and her comments from the meets and taking the time to answer emails.
