Friday afternoon, at the beginning of the Hesperian Historical Society meeting, Steve Richardson, Cawker City, was awarded a community service award by members of the Desire Tobey Sears Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. Plans to honor Mr. Richardson began in late 2019. Local residents were asked to write letters of support and the application was approved by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. Plans were made to present the award in April of this year. However, because of COVID concerns, the chapter meeting was cancelled.

The secret was kept until Oct. 23! Three members of the local DAR chapter attended the Historical Society meeting and presented Steve with a certificate and lapel pin for his outstanding work on restoring the east wall of the Ledger Building, located along Highway 24 in Cawker City. According to the restoration report presented at the meeting, the work on the east wall is finished up to the end of the building. This includes repointing and a concrete cap on the front exposed portion of the former Maddox building. Twenty-eight bags of Sackrete, with sand, were used to cap the step between the thinner upper firewall and the thicker lower wall of the former Maddox building. The hole in the upper south end of the wall has been closed, using reclaimed stone cut to size. The work on the south end of the wall will need to wait until spring.

Mr. Richardson is currently refilling the 26 buckets with new lime putty to have them ready for spring.

The NSDAR Community Service Award is presented to worthy individuals and organizations for outstanding voluntary service in their communities. Past recipients include Christine Strutt, Belleville, for her organization Connor's Cuddles, and the Beloit organizations who worked together to restore the Little Red Schoolhouse.

Members of the Desire Tobey Sears Chapter were proud to present the NSDAR Community Service Award to Steve Richardson, Cawker City, Kansas.
