Pickup collides with elk near Guide Rock

October 29, 2020

Kent and Ron Duffy were finishing the last 24 rows of a corn field near Guide Rock when Ron saw this elk get up right by Kentʼs combine. From his combine Ron radioed Kent and told him about the elk and this cell phone picture was snapped. Kent contacted his wife, Katelyn, and she started to the corn field with their children with the hope they would get to see the elk. On the way, they passed the accident scene and returned to take pictures with the dead elk. More pictures of the elk are posted on this newspaperʼs web site.

Dave Mans, Red Cloud, was one mile west of the Guide Rock Country Corner when a large animal rushed out of the north ditch and hit the front fender of his pickup. Mans said, "I just got a glimpse of it before it hit the truck and knew it wasn't a deer!" It was a large bull elk!

Dave Mans' pickup was run into by an elk one mile west of Guide Rock as Dave was headed home to Red Cloud last Wednesday. The elk caused $9,000 damage to his pickup.

Mans had been in Burr Oak preparing for an auction and was on his way home at 6 o'clock in the evening. Harvesters were picking corn in the field north of the highway which probably scared the elk out of the field and into the roadway. Damage to the pickup was approximately $9,000.

A friend of Mans was following him and stopped to assist. He gave Mans a ride to his home. The game warden released the elk to be butchered.

Earlier Kent Duffy spotted an elk in the corn field in which he was picking corn when it jumped up beside his combine. It is speculated that is the elk which ran into the roadway.
