Mary Foley accompanied Mike and Mindy Kilgore, Bennington, to Pittsburg, Kan., last Friday. They stayed for the weekend with Megan, Nathan and Evan Keener. The group celebrated Evan’s second birthday with a party on Saturday. The theme and his favorite cartoon character was Scooby Do. The Kilgores and Mary returned to Bennington Sunday evening where Mary stayed the night with the Kilgores and returned home Monday afternoon.

Government commodities were delivered from Belleville to the Burr Oak Christian Church basement by Dave Vopat and Mary Foley last Wednesday. Helping with the unpacking and distribution were Cheryl Hillman, Gary and Penny Turner, Peggy Wilson and Cliff and Glenny Barnes. An assortment of food products were distributed to each client.

Diana Ord, Guide Rock, and her friend, Heather Ellison, Lucedale, Miss., drove Cliff and Glenny Barnes to Kearney on Thursday afternoon where Glenny had appointments with an ENT and an audiologist. Later they stopped by a store to do a little shopping and to visit briefly with the Barnes’ grandson, Steffen Barnes, who is an employee of the store.

On Friday afternoon, Cliff and Glenny Barnes went to the home of Jeff and Diana Ord to visit with Heather Ellison and the Ords. Later in the afternoon they delivered Jerzie Ord’s 13th birthday quilt made for her by her Grandma Glenny and her great-aunt, Peggy Wilson, to her home in Red Cloud.

“A Mansion Over the Hilltop” opened the morning worship service at the Burr Oak United Methodist Church on Sunday. The Call to Worship followed the welcome and announcements. Matt Boyles served as usher. Prayers were for those who are shut in because of the COVID virus; joys were for the upcoming holiday and how we might celebrate Thanksgiving. “Giving Thanks” with Ephesians 1:15-23 was the message brought by Pastor Ellis. We are reminded we need to give thanks for all of the Lord’s blessings no matter how small. Fellowship time was hosted by Alma Garman.

Prior to the morning service at the Burr Oak Christian Church on Sunday, a discussion was held concerning the possibility of beginning online church services. There seems to be an increase in COVID-19 cases in some of the north central Kansas counties. It was decided to begin the online service on Sunday, Nov. 29, and to continue in that manner until the first of the year. At that time, the COVID-19 situation will be reevaluated and a decision will be made as to whether to continue online services or go back to in-house service.

Pastor Richard Cox’s message on Sunday was entitled “How Great Is Your God?” His selected scripture reading was Psalm 145:1-21. this Psalm written by David is full of praise for the Lord. God was a big deal to King David and this Psalm attests to that fact. David was a shepherd and most likely had a great amount of time out with his flock of sheep many nights. He no doubt had an abundance of time to look at all the stars in the night sky and was awed by God’s creation. When life got David down, it was his faith in God that got him back up and through each trial. People who don’t call on God in their time of trouble cannot know the peace of mind that comes from knowing God is always there no matter what happens. The Lord is near to all who call on Him in truth. We need to be ready to give an account of why we believe our God is great. We don’t have to argue about it, but we do need to be able to say why our God is great. Anyone having an emptiness in their heart that material things or worldly relationships cannot fill, should try putting God in that empty place.
