Don’t argue with those folks who talk and write about the winter days of December.

While Astronomical Winter doesn’t commence until the solstice on Dec. 21, Meterological Winter started Tuesday, Dec. 1, and lasts through Feb. 28.

What’s the difference?

Astronomical seasons are based on the position of the earth in relation to the sun, whereas the meterological seasons follow the calendar year and are based on the annual temperature cycle.
