SHS girls take fifth at holiday tourney

The Superior High School girls basketball team brought home a fifth place finish from the Runza Holiday Tournament. The Wildcats downed number four ranked D-1 Bruning-Davenport-Shickley 47-41 last Monday. They topped Class C-1 Cozad, 49-35 to take third place.

Superior never trailed in their contest with B-D-S. They led 26-18 at the half and slowly pulled away for the 47-41 win.

It was all Superior all the way against the Cozad Haymakers. Superior pulled out to a 30-17 half time lead and never looked back. When the final buzzer sounded, the wWldcats were the 49-35 winners. They improved their season record to 5-4.

Shayla Meyer led the scoring charge for Superior against B-D-S with 28 points. Sierra Blackburn added 11 points. Neah McMeen registered five points while Laci Kirchhoff accounted for three points.

Meyer latched onto 13 rebounds. Kirchhoff pulled down eight rebounds. Sierra Blackburn and Ella Gardner latched onto four rebounds apiece. Atlee Kobza kept two rebounds. Emma Henderson took down a rebound.


Meyer slipped through 26 points to lead the Superior scoring charge against Cozad. Blackburn contributed 11 points. Kirchhoff came through with seven points. Gardner registered four points. Henderson sank a free throw for a point.

Meyer hit the boards for 14 rebounds. Gardner grabbed five rebounds. Kirchhoff and McMeen generated four rebounds each. Madison Heusinkvelt picked up two rebounds. Kobza finished the game with one rebound.

Jake Nannen, head coach of the Wildcats, said,“Anytime you can end a holiday tournament with a winning record, it is something to be proud of. Now, we have some practice time to continue to enhance our strengths and improve upon our weaknesses. “


Kansas Public Notices

The Wildcats return to the court Friday when they host the Thayer Central Titans at Superior. Superior travels to Geneva, Saturday, for a contest with Fillmore Central. The Wildcats are on the road again, Tuesday, when they visit Henderson for a game with the Heartland Huskies.
