February 11, 2021

It was a tough way for the Rock Hills girls basketball team to see their six game winning streak come to an end. They fell to the Sylvan- Lucas Mustangs, 38-35, at Sylvan Grove last Tuesday. The team kicked off a new winning streak with a 52-45 win over Lakeside at Mankato Friday giving the grizzlies a 7-2 record for the season. Rock Hills extended their win streak Monday with a 38-27 win over Tescott at Mankato. It was win number eight to go along with two losses. The Grizzlies visited Natoma Tuesday with game results unavailable at press time.

Rock Hills and Sylvan-Lucas engaged in a back and forth game over three quarters with the score tied at 24. It was a matter of just a little too late for the Grizzlies as they fell three points short, 38-35 for their second loss of the season. They just ran out of time to complete their fourth quarter comeback.

The team showed no signs of being adversely affected by Tuesday’s loss when they hosted Lakeside at Mankato Friday. The Grizzlies trailed by one point, 25-24, at the end of two quarters of play. A robust offensive and defensive third quarter provided the winning cushion as Rock Hills posted a 17 8 offensive advantage over Lakeside. They held on to secure win number seven of the season 52-45.

Tescott stayed close to the Grizzlies but was unable to close the gap. Rock Hills held a 22-17 lead at the half. They held the Tigers at bay and secured another win as they work through their most successful season in many years.

Lauren Whelchel led the Grizzlies offense against Sylvan-Lucas with 16 points. Jauclyn Lemke knocked down 12 points. Karrigan Dunstan put up seven points. Whelchel took control of 10 rebounds. Dunstan picked off six rebounds. Austyn Groote grabbed two rebounds. Danica Frost and Selena Luong snagged a rebound each.

Whelchel continued her explosive offensive performances with 24 points against Lakeside. Lemke accounted for 12 points. Dunstan put through six points. Avery Brown was good for four points. Groote and Luong netted three points apiece.

Whelchel was again the lead scorer against tescott with 21 points. Dunstan hit for 10 points. Groote sank a three pointer. Frost and Luong recorded two points apiece.

Rock Hills hosts the Lincoln Leopards Friday at Mankato. The Grizzlies go on the road for a game against Wilson Monday. Rock Hills goes back out on the road Tuesday for a game with Southern Cloud.
