Lawrence-Nelson to hold Community Clean up in honor of Earth Day

March 25, 2021

Ben Van Horn, Lincoln, and James Merrill, Nelson, sons-in-law of Carol and Dick Eckles, work to clear the Nelson community tennis courts so they can be utilized by the Merrill family. James enjoys teaching his two daughters to play tennis. Unfortunately, in recent months, the tennis courts have been used as a dog run. More than 16 bags of leaves, animal droppings and trash were bagged. Nelson is to have its annual spring park cleanup soon. This certainly allowed a jump start on that. Just a friendly reminder that if you are using the courts to exercise your fur babies, please clean up after them so this area of the park can be enjoyed by all.

Lawrence-Nelson students plan to celebrate Earth Day by helping out members of the community. Residents of both Lawrence and Nelson can request assistance with all types of yard work and community clean-up. Lawrence-Nelson has been observing Earth Day in this fashion since 2015.

Students can use this as community service when applying for some scholarships. Several scholarships require they have community service hours outside of school association or the school day.

This activity helps students learn the importance of community-school relationships. Projects such as this help students take pride in their community. They allow them to give back to their community and its members who have supported them in their extra-curricular activities.

The event will take place on Thursday, April 26, and is a free service. Requests can be sent to http://bit.ly/3t9e5xg or contacting Alayna Ham at 402-225-3371.
