Gerald W. “Jerry” Schmitt, 82, of Ord died Friday, April 2, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.

A funeral was held at 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Pastor Adam Archer officiated. Inurnment was in the Ord City Cemetery. Military honors were presented by the Ord VFW Post 7029 and American Legion Post 38.

Gerald Wayne was born Aug. 28, 1938, at Oak, to Gottleib W. and Emma Marie (Herman) Schmitt. He was raised on the farm near Oak attending Oak Elementary School and graduated from Nelson High School.

Jerry served in the United States Army from November of 1956 to August of 1958; and was stationed in Germany.

On Feb. 14, 1964, Jerry was united in marriage to LaVonne Holmes at Ord. The couple made their home in Ord and raised their two sons, Dennis and Bruce.

Jerry made his career with the Nebraska State Patrol for 30 years. He began as a patrolman in August of 1962 and retired on Dec. 31, 1992. Jerry served for two terms at the Nebraska State Legislature, from January of 1993 to December 2000.

Jerry was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the VFW Post 7029. He enjoyed Nebraska history, archeology and Indian artifacts. He enjoyed time hunting, fishing and watching World of Outlaws, racing and rodeos.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, LaVonne of Ord; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dennis and Shannon Schmitt of Olathe, Kan., and Bruce Schmitt of Alburquerque, N.M.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Raulo Damian of Lincoln, Neb. and a sister in law, Phyllis Schmitt of Oak.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Sylvia and Jarvis Lautenschlager; and a brother, Victor Schmitt.
