The Superior High School Red Caps Booster Club hosted the 2021 high school athletic banquet at the high school gymnasium last Monday. It was a slimmed down affair in comparison with past years with masks required. Students and guests were served an assortment of cookies as well as a beverage upon entering the school building. They then entered the gymnasium for the presentation. Attendees were seated in the bleachers.

The Red Caps provide multiple services to the athletic program, from meals to a team bus, to supplement existing school programs.

A podium was placed in the center of the gymnasium floor. Paul Heusinkvelt, the newly named acting athletic director welcomed the attendees to the event.

B. J. Gardner, president of the Red Caps opted not to speak.

Kelsea Blevins, the head volleyball coach highlighted the 2020 volleyball season. The team was victimized by the COVID-19 virus. Players were quarantined. The team qualified for the state tournament for the fourth consecutive year. The coach thanked the players and their parents for their support and strength throughout the unusual season.

Ron Hershberger, the cross-country coach, noted there were no girls on the 2020 team. He thanked the team members for their hard work in practice and at meets.

Heusinkvelt, the head football coach, recapped his first season as head coach. The team made great strides through hard work and discipline. He anticipates the improvements in play continuing. He thanked all involved for their support.

Seth Going, wrestling coach, spoke to the progress the team made over the course of the season. The team qualified five wrestlers for the state tournament and brought home a second place medal in the 106 pound weight bracket.

Luke Chadwell, boys head basketball coach for the 2020-2021 season, presented the highlights of the season. He noted the hard work and perseverance demonstrated by the team.

Nannen, the girls head basketball coach, reviewed his first season as coach. He was proud of the accomplishments they achieved throughout the season and the playoffs.

Kevin Miller coached the inaugural season of the Superior bowling team. He recounted the team began with two players and expanded to five as the season progressed. The team finished with a 2-2 record.

Stephanie Corman, coach of the drill team, singled out her team for their repeat performance as state champions in the high kick class. The team competed virtually at the national tournament and were rewarded with a fifth place finish.

Heusinkvelt is in his first year as track coach. He pointed out the season is ongoing. Ella Gardner has had a breakout year for the Wildcats. She set a school record in the long jump. Heusinkvelt said she had the talent for the triple jump. She entered the event and promptly set a new school record. He looks forward to several team members qualifying for the state meet.

Kirk Utecht, golf coach, paid tribute to Conner Blackstone, a senior, who has started every Superior golf team match since his freshman year. Todd Keifer, the other team senior member, has the distinction of being the only Superior golfer to swallow a ball marker.

Heusinkvelt presented Iron Cats Awards for Lifters of the Year to Madison Heusinkvelt for the girls. The three boys recipients were Dane Miller, Seth Schnakenberg and Elijah Heusinkvelt.

Bob Cook, principal of the Superior secondary schools, honored the service of Donna Miller, 41 years, and Kevin Miller, 17, years, to the Superior school system. Donna served in a number of positions over the years and currently is the secretary of the athletic department. Kevin has taught biology and history. He has served as head football coach, bowling coach and athletic director.

The Red Caps presented scholarships to Sierra Blackburn, Alexa Cox, Conner Blackstone and Jedd Whitmore. B. J. Gardner was the presenter.

The Jim Conger Memorial Wrestling Award was presented to Hayden Neeman by Jerred Ehlers.

The Lisa Weiss Memorial Volleyball Scholarship was presented to Sierra Blackburn by Kevin Miller.

The Roder Family Athletic Scholarships were awarded to Sierra Blackburn and Conner Blackstone by Kevin Miller.

The Hustle Awards were presented by Dr. Robert Liebel to Alexa Cox and A. J. Leibel.
