Country Roads

Farm activities have increased. Fields were fertilized and the planting of the fall crops is almost at an end. Around Memorial Week-end, the alfalfa begins to be cut and baled. Cattle now call the lush pasture lands home. It is hoped pasture fences have been checked and will keep cattle confined. Thankfully the spring rains came and the pasture ponds are filled. The grasses grew and hopefully the rains will come when needed to keep the grasses growing. Spring calving has thankfully concluded, as it began during a cold snap and some calves were lost.

The planters came out and corn was planted. It is now up and looking good. The wheat planted last fall is more than knee high, waving in the Kansas winds and beginning to head. A hint of yellow can be seen mixed with the green ripening wheat. Barring a late freeze or a hail storm, it should be a great wheat harvest in a couple of weeks. The rains stopped some of the farmers from finishing planting soybeans, and now the farmland has dried, the soybeans need to be in the ground soon. For those planting milo and feed, that time should come soon.

It is time to get to those thistles which can be found in the pastures. You may think the thistles were all taken care of last year, but some can always be spotted. New growing locust trees are also done away with when found.

Wildflowers are seen. They add color to the grasslands. The rains and the warm sunshine have increased the wildflower numbers. My favorites are the wild roses that often can be found along the country roads. The sweet smell of clover fills the air. The lilacs and the peonies out did themselves this year in producing flowers. Hopefully the wild plum bushes will be filled with plums this summer as more plum jelly is needed to be made.

It’s hard keeping up with the grass mowing in the farm yard, but with the rains not coming as regularly as they were, the mowers may get a rest for a while.

Soon it will be time to get the combines and trucks out and prepare them for what lies ahead.
