Expectations running high for 39th Firekracker run

July 4

The 245th anniversary of this nation’s founding will be celebrated throughout the area this weekend.

Many area communities have special activities planned to mark the holiday.

Here in Superior the Superior Joggers are planning for the 39th annual running of the Firekracker run with classes and races for various ages and activity levels. Sponsors are planning for more than 300 runners to enter the event which will begin and end near the City Park band shell. The first races will depart at 7:45 a.m.

When designing the first 10K race course, the planners’ goal was to chart a course that would give contestants an interesting tour of the town.

The Superior PEO Chapter will begin serving breakfast at 7:30.

The day’s events will climax at dusk with a free fireworks show at Brodstone Memorial Field. As in past years, the show will be presented by members of the Superior Volunteer Fire Department. Before the fireworks show, Brodstone Memorial Hospital will be grilling hot dogs and hamburgers with proceeds going to help pay for the fireworks. The hospital grill will be located near the football field concession stand. Donations for the fireworks fund may be sent to the Superior Fire Department at P.O. Box 157, Superior.

For those who want to travel a ways, the Sutton Chamber of Commerce has advertised in this newspaper a concert with Lan Munsick stating at 8 p.m Friday. The concert is part of Sutton’s annual Dugout Days which start today and continue through Sunday. The schedule is printed elsewhere in this issue of The Express.

Apparently there will not be a fireworks show at Lovewell State Park this holiday. A park calendar indicates a fireworks show is planned for Saturday evening, Sept. 4. The firing location will be near the Cedar Point Boat Ramp.

The Nelson Community Club has special activities for Saturday and Sunday, Saturday’s activities include a fun walk, run and bike races, washerboard tournaments, kids’ games, sand vollleyball, free swim in the Nelson pool, cardboard boat races, dance and fireworks and food options. Sunday’s activities will center around golf events at the country club.

At Lawrence, the American Legion Post will be holding the sixth annual July 4th barbeque chicken feed. For those who do not like chicken, hamburgers will be available.
