Rock Hills FBLA places at nationals

Daniel McDill, Rock Hills, created a business plan for a truck stop in Mankato and earned a fourth place national FBLA finish.

Seven Rock Hills FBLA members participated in the National Leadership Conference activities throughout the month of June. Members in two competitive events, Business Plan and the Chapter Community Service Project, were announced as Top 15 finalists in mid-June. On July 2 during the virtual award ceremony, both events were announced as Top 10 winners. Daniel McDill placed fourth in the Business Plan competition with his outline and financial details for a truck stop in Mankato. The chapter community service project, which involved all FBLA chapter members, was announced as the seventh place chapter in the nation. This chapter community service project was Wreaths Across Jewell County where the chapter placed more than 1,400 sprays on veterans' graves in Jewell County. Karrigan Dunstan and Jacob Underwood were responsible for the report and presentation.

Jacob Underwood and Karrigan Dunstan represented the Rock Hills FBLA chapter in the Community Service Project competition at the National FBLA convention. The Rock Hills report and presentation earned a seventh place finish.

Overall Kansas had 12 Top 10 winners and two of those 12 were Rock Hills. Only one other FBLA chapter in Kansas, Blue Valley North of the Kansas City area, had more Top 10 winners than Rock Hills. This shows that the students in a small rural high school in Kansas have the ability to compete on a national level as long as they have the work ethic to continue to try to improve and continue to practice to become better at what they are doing.

The chapter was also one of just three Kansas chapters earning the National Outstanding Chapter recognition. Marysville and Wellsville, each with more than 100 members, were the other Kansas chapters earning this award. In comparison, Rock Hills had 34 chapter members this past year. Additionally, the chapter was named a national Gold Seal Chapter and earned the Chapter Challenge national award.

Other members participating in the national competition were Karrigan Dunstan, public speaking; Jerrod Gillett, Banking and Financial Systems; Davin Coil, Jacob Underwood, and Kit Wagner, Broadcast Journalism; Lauren Whelchel, spreadsheet applications; and Hannah Simmelink, Introduction to Business Presentation. All of the national competitors placed in first, second, or third place at the state level which earned them the opportunity to compete at the national level.
