Shirley Free

 

Shirley J. Free, the daughter of William Kasl and Anna (Cherney) Kasl, was born Dec. 2, 1938, near Wayne, Kan. She died July 5, 2021, at the Jewell County Hospital-ISB, Mankato, at the age of 82 years, 7 months, and 3 days.

Shirley grew up in rural Cuba, Kan., graduating from Cuba High School. On April 22, 1960, she was united in marriage to Benny O. Free. To this union was born Cindy, Becky and Curtis. The couple made their home in Formoso.

Shirley was a bookkeeper for grain elevators and livestock companies in Republic and Jewell counties. After her retirement, she worked part time at the Central National Bank in Formoso.

Shirley was a member of the Formoso Community Church. She also was a 4-H project leader and was a member of the Formoso Community Pride Committee for several years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Benny O. Free in 2018; brother, Don Kasl; and sister, Wilma Janousek.

Shirley is survived by one son, Curtis (Jody) Free of Salina; two daughters, Cindy (Nick) Kimes of Harrison, Ark., and Becky (Bob) Roush of Formoso; four grandchildren, Annika Free and Dane Free, both of Salina, Luke (Lauren) Roush of El Dorado, and Samantha (Alan) Sramek of La Crosse; five great-grandchildren, Westen, Levi and Sadie Roush, Brayden and Emma Sramek; one step-grandchild, Kara Tramell of Harrison, Ark .; two step-great-grandchildren, Erin and Becca Tramell; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Her funeral was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 10, at the Formoso Community Church, Formoso,with Pastor Daniel Waide, officiating.

Interment was in the Balch Cemetery, rural Formoso.

Visitation was from 1 unil 8 p.m. on Friday at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Belleville, with the family greeting friends from 5 until 7 p.m.
