Rock Hills Elementary School welcomes first year teacher, Hannah Daniels. Daniels will be teaching third grade this year. She is a Jewell County resident and lives in Jewell where she was born and raised.

Daniels attended K-State online to receive her master's degree this May. There were approximately 200 people in her program. It was reported there were people from 30 states and three countries. The students in the program were separated into groups of ten to provide more one on one instruction.

Daniels, 24, enjoys traveling, playing sports and watching movies in her free time. "It's kind of strange moving from Manhattan where there were a lot of things to do,"Daniels said. Her three cats help keep her company in the time she is home.

Daniels worked in a daycare after she received her bachelor's degree. After that, she was a substitute teacher. As she was substituting, COVID started. Daniels said restrictions were put on the school and the teachers had to be more flexible. The school Daniels substituted for did not have to close during COVID.

"COVID kind of forced me to move back home," Daniels said. She chose to stay in Jewell County to be close to family. Daniels' favorite part of living in Jewell County is being close to family and friends. She also said the people here are friendly for the most part.

Daniels said the hardest part of her online schooling was communication and trying to figure out what the teachers were wanting. She said her favorite part of being a teacher so far is getting to be with the students and getting to know them and their families. "Trying to figure out what's best for my group of students is the hardest part of my job so far," Daniels said. She is responsible for teaching her group of students and classroom management.

Daniels comes from a family of teachers. "I love working with children and seeing their take on life," said Daniels. "I want to make an impact while they are young."

When asked if she had any advice for people who want to work as a teacher, Daniels said, "Be open to possibilities and don't be afraid to ask for help or advice."
