Mildred Svoboda

Mildred J. Svoboda, the daughter of Lawrence and Jenny (Sebek) Drudik, was born on May 12, 1927, on a farm near Lawrence, Nebraska. She died Aug. 6, 2021, at the CHI St. Francis Hospital at Grand Island,at the age of 94 years, 2 months, 25 days.

Mildred was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lawrence. Growing up on a farm North East of Lawrence she attended Sacred Heart Grade School and was a 1945 Lawrence High School graduate. After high school, she attended Lincoln School of Commerce and received an associate degree. She then worked for Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph in both Lincoln and Crete offices, and also worked at Ideal Grocery Store in Lincoln.

On Oct. 18, 1949, she was united in marriage to Tony Svoboda. To this union three children were born Bob, Ron and Marlene.

Mildred lived in the Lawrence community most of her life. She was a member of the Altar Society in Nelson Sacred Heart and later St. Leo's in Grand Island.

She enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens. She raised chickens and tended to all the other farm animals. She worked alongside her husband in the daily farm life. She liked to cook and bake. Her specialties were kolaches and angel food cakes. Her hobbies were reading, sewing and embroidery.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tony; and brother, Edward Drudik.

Survivors include her children, Robert (Paula) of Lincoln; Ron (Becky) of Hastings and Marlene (Dennis) Hilderbrand of Grand Island; five grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.

Mass of Christian burial was held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, Aug. 11, from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lawrence, with the Rev. Corey Harrison and the Rev. Don Buhrman officiating. Reader was Lyle Kohmetscher. Servers were Dillon Laughlin and Kade Peters.

Music was "Precious Lord TakeMy Hand," "Here I Am Lord," "HowGreat Thou Art" and "O Loving God,"with Sheri Buescher as the song leaderand Linda Ostdiek as the organist.

Visitation was held on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m., at Sacred Heart Church.

Pallbearers were Jon Svoboda, Brent Hilderbrand, Jared Hilderbrand, Scott Howell, Mike Honeycutt and Brian Skalka.

Interment was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Lawrence.

Memorials are suggested to go to Lawrence Community Center.
