Operation We Care delivers goods to deployed troops

August 19, 2021

Ross Koehler, son of Deb and Randy Koehler, Nelson, serves in the space force and deployed with an army unit. In recent conversations with her son, Deb felt a need to do something more for our deployed military. She reached out to her church and "Operation We Care" was created. The church has begun collecting donations to send care packages to our deployed military.

Through several conversations with her son, Ross, Deb Koehler learned many of our deployed troops need our help. Koehler is currently enlisted in the United States Space Force and deployed with an army unit. Ross calls home regularly and has recently expressed to his mother many of our troops feel homesick.

Deb took this seriously. She spoke with her church family in Nelson. The members and board of the United Church of Christ decided to reach out to those deployed via "Operation We Care!" With Ross's help, Deb and other church members came up with a list of items that can be put into care packages and sent to those serving overseas.

D&D's Lyons Den was able to donate $138 to the United Church of Christ "Operation We Care" through a 50-50 pot. Donations left by patrons were matched by the establishment. Pictured are Deb Koehler and Dawn Myers.

So far, Deb has sent five boxes to her son's unit totaling 106 lbs. The cost of shipping was $160. D&D's Lyon Den has set up a 50-50 donation box and has donated $138 thus far. Donations can be left at either the church or at D&D's. Items needed are shampoo, body wash, unscented baby wipes, toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss, travel size deodorant, lip balm, foot powder, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, lens wipes, cards, board games, batteries (AAA and AA), snacks of all kinds (no chocolate), hot sauce packets, water flavoring packets, beef jerky, Slim Jims, protein bars, gum, and sunflower seeds.

Being away from home for long periods of time and not being able to see your friends, family, spouse, children, etc. can take a toll on even the most seasoned soldier. Something as simple as a stick of gum can make all the difference. Let's pray for our troops and show them that they are not forgotten, and that their sacrifice is appreciated and that they are loved. Let's do what we can to see them home safe!
