SHS volleyball opens season with loss

The Superior High School volleyball team fell to the Grand Island Central Catholic Crusaders in three sets, 17-25, 16-25 and 25-27, in their season opener at Superior, Thursday.

The Crusaders are a Class C-1 school while the Wildcats are in Class C-2.

The match marked the debut of Randall Loch as head coach of the Wildcats.

By the time the Wildcats picked up momentum in the third set, where they fell 25-27, it was too late. The team showed sparks of excellence and the team looked to get into the win column when they played Fillmore Central at Geneva, Tuesday. Match results were unavailable at press time.

Shayla Meyer led Superior with 18 kills. Teegan Duncan contributed seven kills. Madison Heusinkvelt jammed down four kills. Cailyn Barry took care of three kills while Ella Gardner had one kill.

Meyer scored the lone Wildcat ace.

Superior recorded no blocks for the match.

Meyer lifted up 10 digs. Duncan and Gardner handled eight digs each. Atlee Kobza contributed seven digs. Sadie Rempel accounted for five digs. Brooklyn Grabast put up three digs. Barry finished with two digs.

Tonight (Thursday) is Parents Night as the Wildcats host in-county rival, the Lawrence-Nelson Raiders at the high school gymnasium. The junior varsity match is scheduled for 5 p.m. The team travels to Doniphan, Tuesday, for a match with the Doniphan-Trumbull Cardinals.
