Goose waddles home, survives Five Wild Cousins Join Tame Pair

The Geese at Lake Emerson

Before last winter's bitter spell, a flock of tame geese lived on and around Lake Emerson. They had been there since last summer when the lake was drained for dredging. They stayed during the dredging. Tame geese can't fly.

But when it got cold, really cold, the entire lake froze over. Some of the flock did not survive the elements and the predators. However, there was one gray goose that started for home. As a goose waddles, it was about a half mile.

Home was Dale Willmeth's back yard in Jewell where it had been raised. He was about a half a block away when Willmeth and Karen Cook found him....
