The L-N first full week of volleyball proved to be interesting. The Tuesday night game was a rematch against Palmer and the Raiders picked up another victory over Palmer 3-0. Then, on Thursday night a short trip down the highway to Superior gave the Lady Raiders their first 4-Set game of the young season, but found the Class C-2 School too strong on this night and lost the game 3-1.

The game summaries:

L-N – PALMER: 25-19, 25-13, 25-23: The rematch with Palmer in just a few days proved to be a good rematch as the Raiders put together a respectful game that provided another win and upped their season record to 3-1.

L-N had a decisive advantage attacking the ball overall in this game while Palmer had a little better night serving.

Hitting the ball at the net for L-N had Emma Epley with 11 kills out of 27 hits; Sydney Biltoft had 9 kills, Aleah Heikkinen had seven and Kara Menke had six out of nine with no hitting errors.

At the service line, Aleah and Katelyn Mazour each had five Ace Serves and Hanna Skinner had four.

An area with wide differences was in ball handling. Led by Katelyn's 13 and Emma's 12 Assists, L-N held a 32-4 advantage in Assists for the game.

(Kills, Ace, Digs) Hanna Skinner 0, 4, 3; Elsa Jorgensen 0, 1, 6 ; Emma Epley 11, 0, 2; Aleah Heikkinen 7, 5, 6; Kara Menke 6, 0, 1; Emily Troudt 3, 1, 3; Kylie Beard 1, 0 1; Katelyn Mazour 0, 5, 5; Sydney Biltoft 9, 0, 1; .

Assists: Katelyn 13, Emma 12.

Blocks: No solo blocks; Assists: Aleah 3, Emma 1, Emily 1, Kylie 1.

Serve Receive: Aleah 17-18, Elsa 15-15.

L-N – SUPERIOR: 18-25, 17-25, 26-24, 13-25: The trip down the highway on Thursday matched the Lady Raiders against the usually tough, Class C-2 team Superior. The girls managed to steal one set, but were just unable to get a rhythm going to set a winning tone.

Sets no. 1 and 2: The first two sets were almost 'twin' sets in that the score was close at the beginning of each set. L-N trailed 12-14 in the first set and 14-16 in the second set before Superior was able to get a little distance in the score and pull away for the wins.

Neither team was able to sustain a scoring run and there were only a couple of volleys in either match that lasted any time at all. To its credit, the Lady Raiders found that a long push to the back of the Superior court often scored a point and Superior found that the ball pounded down in the middle of the Raider court sometimes scored points.

Set no. 3: Superior started this set with a serve that Emily promptly slammed down for a kill. Superior had a couple of hitting errors before Sydney recorded another kill to give L-N a 4-0 lead.

Superior managed to come back and earned a lead at 15-11.

From here on, the game kept everyone in the gym glued to the action. Superior had a couple of serving and hitting errors. Sydney had a kill and Emily and Kylie each recorded ace serves and L-N tied the score at 21-21. The score was tied at 22, 23 and 24 before Superior gave a point by hitting the ball out of bounds.

The final point came when Katelyn dove for the ball on the floor to keep it alive and set up Aleah who was able to record a kill for the set victory.

Set no. 4: This being the first four-set game of the year, it seemed that L-N may have just run out of power. Superior scored first and maintained the lead throughout the set. The Raider's ball control left them with too many attack errors, allowing Superior a couple of long scoring run and the game victory.

The Raider's "True Grit" showed up in that 3rd set when many a team might have just given up. L-N showed up well against a team two Classes larger and will help in the long season as they always play a tough schedule.
