L-N volleyball at St. Cecilia tourney

It was a tough outing for the Lawrence-Nelson volleyball team. They competed at the Hastings St. Cecilia tournament Tuesday and Thursday and the opposition was brutal.

They opened Tuesday’s round against Superior, their in-county Class C-2 powerhouse rival. It was the second meeting of the season for the two teams. It once again took Superior three sets to put away the pesky Raiders, 25-22, 22-25 and 11-25. The Raiders bounced back with a three-set, 19-25, 25-18 and 26-24, win over the Wood River Eagles in their other Tuesday match.

Lawrence-Nelson took three sets, 22-25, 25-19 and 25-22 to dispose of the Heartland Huskies in their opening game Thursday at Hastings. They ran into the Hastings St. Cecilia Hawkettes, another Class C-2 powerhouse, in their next match. They were swept in two sets, 20-25 and 17-25. They closed out the tournament with a three-set, 25-23, 18-25 and 16-25 loss to the Cross County Cougars.

The Raiders competed at the Red Cloud triangular, Tuesday, along with Kenesaw. Match results were unavailable at press time.

Emma Epley listed 10 kills against Superior. Aleah heikkinen notched four kills for the Raiders. Sydney Biltoft and Katelyn Mazour posted two kills apiece. Emily Troudt had a kill. Elsa Jorgensen scored with two aces. Epley led the diggers with 10. Mazour and Hanna Skinner batted up seven each. Heikkinen finished with four digs. Troudt added two digs.

Epley was the lead killer against Wood river with 11. Heikkinen and Mazour stepped in with seven kills each. Troudt nailed two kills while Mazour had one. Menke sliced through three aces. Epley and Jorgensen plowed through two aces apiece. Mazour had one ace. Mazour lobbed up 13 digs. Epley popped up 12 digs. Skinner contributed 11 digs. Menke added seven digs for the Raiders. Heikkinen owned five digs for the match.

Menke listed nine kills against Heartland. Mazour took care of seven kills. Biltoft and Epley recorded three kills each. Kylie Beard and Heikkinen had two kills apiece. Jorgensen took care of three aces. Epley and Mazour iced two aces. Beard scored with an ace. Jorgensen and Mazour took credit for 14 digs apiece. Heikkinen mixed in 12 digs. Epley tossed up 11 digs. Biltoft and Skinner were under four digs each.

Epley had six kills against Hastings St. Cecilia. Biltoft handled five kills. Menke took on four kills. Heikkinen stepped up with three kills. Beard, Mazour and Skinner had a kill apiece. Epley, Heikkinen and Jorgensen each scored an ace. Skinner collected eight digs. Epley, Mazour and Menke accounted for four digs each. Heikkinen had three digs.

Epley finished with 11 kills against Cross county. Biltoft contributed four digs. Mazour posted two kills. Beard, Heikkinen, Jorgensen and Mazour added a kill each. Epley, Heikkinen and Jorgensen scored with an ace each. Biltoft had two blocks while Heikkinen had one. Skinner went for 14 digs. Jorgensen was responsible for 12 digs. Heikkinen gathered six digs. Epley punched up three digs. Beard, Biltoft and Menke added a dig each.

The Raiders travel to Blue Hill, Tuesday, to take on the Bobcats.
