Volleyball team split last week's games

October 14, 2021

Mike and Carrie Heikkinen their senior, Aleah, share a smile at parents night during the volleyball games last Tuesday.

The volleyball schedule for the Lady Raiders was less hectic last week between several busy ones. Last week saw the only action in a triangular at Nelson during which they defeated Red Cloud, but lost to Kenesaw. The girls are standing with a season record of 11-12 with games this week and the Conference Tournament beginning this weekend.

The triangular last week summaries:

L-N – KENESAW: 23-25, 23-25: In the match against one of the better teams in Class D-1, Kenesaw, the girls played a good game, but came up just short on the scoreboard. They kept close to Kenesaw with the virtue of keeping the number of attack and service errors below the season average. Kara Menke with 13 of 16 good swings and six aces and Emma Epley with 16 of 19 good hits with five aces led the offense for this game.

(Kills, Ace, Digs) Sydney Biltoft 3, 0, 1; Aleah Heikkinen 4, 0, 4; Emma Epley 5, 0, 3; Elsa Jorgensen 0, 1, 9; Katelyn Mazour 1, 0, 9; Emily Troudt 2, 0, 0; Hanna Skinner 0, 2, 5; Kylie Beard 0, 0, 0; Kara Menke 6, 0, 2.

Assists: Katelyn Mazour 10, Emma Epley 8.

Blocks: Sydney 3, Emma 1, Katelyn 1, Kylie 1; all assists.

Serve Receive: Elsa 16-17, Hanna 10-11, Emma 10-10.

L-N – RED CLOUD: 25-20, 25-27, 25-10: After two strongly contested Sets, the Raiders continued to play strong and well, or else Red Cloud just folded, or a combination of the two.

Set 1: Red Cloud scored first and held that lead until the Lady Raiders went on a seven point scoring run with Elsa Jorgensen doing the serving. In that run Elsa had several ace serves and Sydney and Kylie combined on a block. Interestingly there were four long volleys in the Set with Red Cloud winning three of them. The Set ended with Aleah serving an ace and Red Cloud having a service error.

Set 2: Red Cloud scored first again in this Set and led until Kylie came to the service line and the team went on another seven point scoring run during which Aleah recorded one of her team high seven kills. The score was tied eight times before a net serve by L-N and a couple hitting errors doomed their effort.

Last Tuesday was the Lady Raiders pink out night and parents night. Pink out is a night held by the volleyball and football teams each year to support breast cancer awareness. Pictured are Philip, Kaitlyn, and Denise Mazour.

Set 3: The Lady Raiders scored first in this Set and maintained that lead for the whole Set. The score in the first half of the Set remained close with L-N leading by four points, 12-8. Highlights early on were ace serves by Hanna and Elsa.

The Lady Raiders went on a 13-2 scoring run in the last half of the Set. Highlights included four Kills by Emma, and the serving by Elsa during a six point scoring run.

(Kills, Ace, Digs) Sydney Biltoft 3, 0, 1; Aleah Heikkinen 7, 2, 11; Emma Epley 5, 1, 10; Elsa Jorgensen 0, 4, 6; Katelyn Mazour 1, 0, 5; Emily Troudt 0, 0, 1; Hanna Skinner 0, 4, 10; Kylie Beard 3, 0, 3; Kara Menke 3, 0, 4.
