A little bit of all the above was the hallmark of the 2021 Veterans Day programs at the L-N Public Schools Thursday, Nov. 11.

One hundred and three years ago at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, the end of WWI was officially declared.

In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson declared November 11 as 'Armistice Day' and it was declared a National Holiday in 1938. After World War II and the Korean conflict, the name was changed to Veterans Day.

The program at the middle-senior high school was held in the morning and was organized by Decker Brown, social studies teacher .

The Nelson American Legion provided the Color Guard and posted the colors for the ceremony. The school's music program added to the program with their talent. The program consisted of the senior class members giving respect to Veterans. Several class members did an interview with grandparents who described their experiences while serving America. Several members gave quiet respect by placing an American Flag in a wreath.

The Nelson school's gym included displays of student's art work with a veteran's theme.

The program was attended by a nice crowd from the public, a number of veterans and the school students.

Following the Veterans Day program the Nelson American Legion conducted a "Flag Burning" ceremony to show the proper method of the disposal of an American Flag that may be damaged or soiled through use. Because of the cold, windy weather, this ceremony was shortened to only one flag being disposed of.

In the afternoon, a program was held at the L-N Elementary School in Lawrence. Organized by Andy Peterson, elementary teacher, the elementary students conducted the program.

The Lawrence American Legion provided the Color Guard and posted the Colors for the program.

The kindergarten, first and second grade used the letters of words with content regarding Veterans and the military to show their respect for the Veterans.

The third, fourth and fifth grades wrote and read Thank You letters or poems to the Veterans.

The high school music department also provided their services to the elementary program.

The programs included a little of all that introduced this story. It was better than any program you could find on TV or Broadway.

Both programs ended with cookies and refreshments for all attending.
