Burr Oak plans many Christmas Season happenings

December 2, 2021

This weekend and next, Burr Oak will be holding many Christmas Season Happenings and everyone is invited to join in on the fun.

At 5 p.m., Sunday, there will be a caroling party in the Veteran’s Park sponsored by the local American Legion Junior Auxiliary Unit 263, aided by Matty Volker. A hot chocolate bar will be put to use and the Christmas Star, located in the park, will be lit for the first time. The park has been decorated as a Christmas Wonderland by local volunteers.

All this month, during Burr Oak District Library hours, the annual holiday craft show is being held. Local craft artists have their creations available.

Saturday, Dec. 11, a Christmas Ball will be held at the Burr Oak Community Center building starting at 7 p.m. All are asked to dress in formal attire. Tickets will be available at the door. Ed Bridwell will perform live music for the ball. Refreshments will be served and a few surprise guests will show up. The building will be decorated for the occasion. This event is sponsored by Big Twister Trucks of Burr Oak. All proceeds go towards the roofing project at the historical limestone schoolhouse that now serves as the Burr Oak Museum, and showcases the items and trophies from the Burr Oak and White Rock high schools.

There will be a Decorated Christmas Tree Contest where groups or individuals can bring in an artificial tree decorated in a theme. The trees can be brought into the Community Center building Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. On Sunday, Dec. 12, there will be a Christmas Party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Burr Oak Community Center building. Andrew Babson will have a food stand that will open at 11 a.m. Babson will use funds raised to construct a gazebo near the limestone schoolhouse building as his Boy Scout project.

There will be several events held at the party including a Christmas Cookies Exchange where two dozen homemade cookies are brought in a labeled container, that includes the name of the cookie and the recipe. The idea of the exchange is if you bring cookies, you can take home two dozen cookies others have brought.

Voting on the Themed Christmas Trees will be held during the party. There is an ugly Christmas sweater Contest to see who will bring in and show the Ugliest Christmas Sweater. The sweaters can be store bought or homemade.

Another contest that will be judged is a Christmas Gingerbread Creation. Those interested in participating can bring in a homemade project but no purchased pre-forms will be allowed. These entries can be as a group or individuals. These creations will be auctioned off after the judging.

Another exchange planned for the party is a Christmas Sock Exchange. Those that would like to exchange socks are asked to bring in a wrapped pair of socks, any size for ages 0 to 100.

All contest entries and exchanges are asked they be brought in to the party by noon.

Santa will arrive at 1 p.m. and door prizes provided by local businesses will be given away. This party is sponsored by the Burr Oak Community Club and the local businesses. All proceeds from the party, except from the food stand, will go towards the roofing project of the limestone schoolhouse.

Also from 5 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 15, will be the Christmas Open House at the Grate Lil Gift Shop, Burr Oak.
