SHS girls keep on winning

After a rocky start in their season opener, the Superior High School girls basketball team has continued their winning ways. They turned in a steady performance to down the Fairbury Jeffs 35-25 at Superior last Tuesday. Superior traveled to Wilber, Saturday, where they downed the Wolverines 37-20.

Superior traveled to Blue Hill Tuesday to play the Bobcats with game results unavailable at press time.

Despite a field goal percentage of 16 percent, the Wildcats scored enough to put away their Class C-1 opponent. The defense carried the load. Superior led 18-12 at the half. They did just enough to hold the Jeffs at bay and recorded their second consecutive win.

The Wildcats improved their field goal shooting to 24 percent against Wilber-Clatonia. Superior never trailed in the game. The Wildcats held a 16-9 lead at the end of the second quarter. They slowly but surely opened the gap to win their third consecutive game.

Shayla Meyer led the Superior offense against Fairbury with 19 points. Ella Gardner chipped in eight points. Laci Kirchhoff dropped through four points. Sadie Cornell scored three points. Teegan Duncan hit a free throw for one point.

Meyer grabbed 14 rebounds. Gardner hauled down eight points. Kirchhoff collected six rebounds. Duncan and Neah McMeen accounted for two rebounds each. Halle Bargen and Sadie Cornell posted one rebound apiece.

Meyer scored 13 points to top the Wildcats scoring list. Gardner tallied seven points. Kirchhoff dropped by for six points. Cornell finished with four points. Duncan added three points. Bargen and McMeen were good for two points apiece.

Meyer hit the boards for 17 rebounds. Gardner pulled away four rebounds. Bargen took care of three rebounds. Duncan and Henderson collected two rebounds each. Cornell and McMeen were credited with a rebounds each.

Superior hosts Southern Valley at Superior Friday. The Wildcats visit Utica, Saturday, for a game with Centennial.

The Runza Holiday tournament gets underway Tuesday and continues Monday, Dec. 27 and concludes Tuesday, Dec. 28. Schools competing in this year’s tournament are Central City, Bruning-Davenport-Shickley, Cozad, Mead, Milford and Superior.
