L-N Lady Raiders one point shy of win

December 22, 2021

Surrounded . . . Katelyn Mazour lines up to shoot as her options seem to be limited by the Friend defenders in the game last Friday evening.

One point behind . . .

OK, maybe they needed two points to win, but that one point on the scoreboard stands out.

The L-N Lady Raiders traveled to Friend, Nebraska last week Friday for a single game. In spite of playing with a lot of spirit, they ended up on the low side of the score, 34-35.

Yes, the game was that close throughout the struggle. The score was tied eight times and the lead changed hands six times. The largest lead either team had at any one time was four points.

L-N 8 10 8 8 - 34

Friend 6 10 11 8 - 35

Emma Epley led Raider scorers with 11 as she scored the first two points of the game for L-N.

It was almost as if the area's first dose of cold weather affected the play as few goals of any kind fell through the hoop. That, plus a plethora of turnovers held the girls back and allowed Friend the victory.

The game was tied at 30-30 with 30 seconds left to play in the game. Friend hit 5-6 free throws in the last 30 seconds to play while L-N made 1 of 5.

There were a number of nice plays that kept L-N in the game. In the second period steals by Emma and Aleah followed by assists allowed L-N to build a four point lead. While turnovers were pretty close, L-N did have 22 steals for the night, led by Katelyn Mazour with 5 and Emily Troudt and Elsa Jorgensen each with 4.

Sydney Biltoft gets a three point shot off before a Friend defender can come and defend the shot.

Any one of dozens of things could have changed and the Lady Raiders would have a victory. However, life if life and the girls sit with a season record of 1-4.

(Scoring, rebounds, assists): Sydney Biltoft 6, 6, 0: Claire Himmelberg 5, 2, 0; Jessica Sole 0, 0, 0 Aleah Heikkinen 5, 5, 2; Emily Troudt 0, 7, 2; Elsa Jorgensen 0, 4, 1; Emma Epley 11, 3, 0; Katelyn Mazour 6, 2, 0; Kara Menke 1, 7, 2.

L-N: 34, 36, 7.

Friend: 35, ?, ?.

Three points shots: L-N: 3-24: Claire 1-4, Emma 1-3, Katelyn 1-8; Friend: 2-10.

Free Throws: L-N: 5-21; Friend: 6-17.

The girls played Shelton on Tuesday night and then prepare for a trip west to play in a holiday tournament in Hershey, Neb., during the holiday break on Dec. 28 and 29.
