SHS girls basketball drops a game

Winning basketball games is the norm for the Superior High School girls team. They continued their win streak with a 37-29 win over the Blue Hill Bobcats at Blue Hill last Tuesday. It was the fourth consecutive win for the Wildcats. Southern Valley put an end to the Superior win streak with a 52-47 win at Superior Friday. The Wildcats bounded back, Saturday, with a 47-29 romp against Centennial at Utica. Superior opens play in the Runza Holiday Tournament against Cross County at Superior Tuesday.

Superior trailed Blue Hill 9-8 after the first quarter. The Wildcats held the slimmest of leads, 17-16, at the half. After making offensive and defensive adjustments, Superior pulled ahead 30-20 after three quarters of play. They held off Blue Hill to earn their fourth win of the season.

Superior trailed Southern Valley by one point headed into the final period do play. The Wildcats were unable to close the gap, as the Eagles widened the lead on their way to 52-47 win. It was Superior's second loss of the season.

Superior played consistent offense and defense and had no trouble handling Centennial on their home court. The Wildcats held a 22-15 lead at the half way mark. They continued to pull away as they coasted to a 47-29 win, their fifth of the season.

Technical issues precluded the availability of statistics from the Blue Hill game.

Shayla Meyer led the Superior scoring charge against Southern Valley with 20 points. Ella Gardner dropped in 13 points. Teegan Duncan scored five points. Sadie Cornell and Laci Kirchhoff put through four points apiece. Halle Bargen added a free throw for a point.

Meyer hit the boards for 17 rebounds. Faith Butler, Gardner, Neah McMeen and Kirchhoff landed four rebounds apiece. Duncan nailed down two rebounds.

Cornell was the lead Superior scorer against Centennial with 14 points. Meyer hit for 11 points. Duncan rained through nine points. Gardner added seven points. Bargen posted six points.

Bargen and Meyer collected seven rebounds each. Gardner picked up five rebounds. Butler and Duncan grabbed two rebounds apiece. Cornell and Kirchhoff hauled away one rebound each.

The Wildcats continue Runza Holiday Tournament play Monday and Tuesday against opponents to be determined.
