It was one romp of a game and one nailbiter for the Superior High School girls basketball team over their past two games. The Wildcats cruised past the Deshler Dragons, 40-24, at Superior, last Tuesday. It was a different story when they took on the Class C-1 Auburn Bulldogs, at Auburn, Friday. Superior edged the Bulldogs 48-47 for their 15th win of the season.

Superior held a 21-10 lead at the half over Deshler but were never challenged as they picked up the 40-24 win.

It was a see-saw all through the game. Auburn held onto a slim 12-10 lead after the first quarter. Superior stepped up and took a 24-21 lead into the halfway mark of the game. Superior held a razor thin 34-33 leas going into the final quarter of play. The Wildcats matched the Bulldogs point for point and led 48-47 when time expired. The win left Superior with a 15-3 record for the season.

Shayla Meyer was the top Wildcats scorer against Deshler with 16 points. Laci Kirchhoff kicked in eight points. Sadie Cornell hit for seven points. Ella Gardner put up six points. Halle Bargen popped in three points. Gardner hauled down nine rebounds. Bargen and Meyer hit the boards for seven rebounds each. Madison Heusinkvelt snagged two rebounds. Faith Butler, Cornell, Emma Henderson and Kirchhoff grabbed one rebound apiece.

E. Gardner led the Superior scoring chart with 18 points against Auburn. Cornell dropped through 11 points. Kirchhoff and Meyer contributed eight points each. Bargen was good for two points. Butler sank a free throw for a point. Meyer climbed the boards for 10 rebounds. E. Gardner collected seven rebounds. Bargen picked off three rebounds. Cornell and Teegan Duncan nabbed two rebounds apiece. Kirchhoff and Neah McMeen accounted for one rebound each.

Southern Nebraska conference play got underway Tuesday with opponents and game locations to be determined.

It will be Senior Night, Monday, when Smith Center visits Superior.
