Fires Damage truck, farmer building

February 10, 2022

With red flag warnings posted on Tuesday by the National Weather Service telling of an elevated potential for hard to control fires, members of this area’s fire departments kept their fingers crossed throughout the day hoping they would not be called out.

For the Lawrence department, the day began with a call about 7:30 that morning.

The 911 dispatch center reported a quonset was fire Cliff Mazour farm. The department rolled all of its vehicles and within a half hour or so had the fire under control to the point equipment was being sent back to Lawrence.

Because of the continuing drought which has carried over from last year, fire departments are asking area residents to be extra careful whenever setting a trash fire.

The Superior Volunteer Fire department responded to a call at 1936 Diamond Road south of Superior Saturday afternoon. A 1994 Ford F-150 pickup, owned and driven by Randy Porter, ignited as he was leaving his driveway. Scott Nondorf, chief of the department, reported two trucks and 10 firemen responded to the call. The fire was extinguished in 15 minutes. The truck was gutted. No injuries were reported. Nondorf was concerned that the fire could spread to neighboring pasture land because of the dry conditions and strong winds. Fast action by the fire department kept the fire under control.

Sunday fire destroyed a house in Belleville.
