Presenting biblical answers to tough questions

Q: Were there biblical laws before the 10 commandments?

A:  I guess it depends on what you mean by biblical laws. God designed the universe to function according to certain fundamental laws; whether they be physical laws like gravity, motion and thermodynamics, or moral laws like family, faith and character. Living with a proper respect for these laws (i.e. not jumping off a cliff or changing God’s design for family) has always resulted in blessings and fulfillment in life. The Bible refers to this respect for God’s laws and right living as “righteousness” (a.k.a. right character). The Ten Commandments added a new layer to these fundamental laws by making righteousness a civic responsibility for the nation of Israel as well as fundamental for well-being in life (Deuteronomy 30:15). God did this for Israel to make the destructive effects of unrighteousness more clear and also as a way to protect Israel from it’s harmful effects. More information on God’s purpose for Israel’s civic laws (including the Ten Commandments) can be found in Romans 3:19-24; Romans 7:7-12; and Galatians 3:21-25
