Injection needles damage pumps in Lawrence

March 31, 2022

We Americans are so familiar with that little instrument used in our medical field so often . . . the injection needle. It is used so often in our medical practices in this day and age that we seldom give it much extra thought.

However, it has been causing trouble for the village of Lawrence in recent days.

Last week the Village trustees thought they had caused enough trouble to the village sewer system. A letter was sent out to all village residents, imploring them not to flush the needles down into the sewer system.

It seems a pump in the sewer system received considerable damage when a number of needles collected there. When asked for a possible number, the response was just: “A lot.”

Just like many items we use on a daily basis, the needles can be used for “good” or they can be used for “not so good.” The exact use of the needles is unknown, but what is known is how “some” are disposed of, and disposing them via the sewer system is not a good way to do so.

An estimated cost to repair the damage is not known at this time.
