School remodeling on hold for now

April 28, 2022

Members of the Superior Board of Education unanimously rejected a bid of $1,389,214 proposed to build a new entrance to the secondary school and renovate the office area. The bid represents a building cost of more than $500 per square foot. Original projections were in the $800,000 range or approximately $325 per square foot.

Earlier this year, money was secured at 1.3 percent interest rate for the project, that money can be used anytime within the next three years. $50,000 must be spent by June 1 of this year as part of the agreement.

When bids were let, no one responded to the first round of bidding. Two contractors responded to the second round and one one to the third round.

Matt Sullivan, president, said, “I think it is simply the wrong time to do it. We can bid again next year and maybe things will have settled down.”

Brad Bargen thought it best for the school to bid the whole project which includes renovating the rest rooms. Plumbing repairs to the area indicate more repairs will be needed to keep the facilities operational.

No one challenged the decision.

Supt. Kobza said, “If the money is not spent it can be returned.”
