Project leader helps 4-H youth succeed alongside their dogs

Dogs make great pets, companions and 4-H projects. Kelli Burrus, Post Rock District 4-H dog project leader, volunteers to teach dog care and training because she thrives on seeing youth find success.

Kelli is enthusiastic about dogs and sharing what it takes to show and train dogs. She works with 4-H members at project meetings to help them train their dogs basic obedience commands and, if desired, prepare them for the Post Rock District 4-H dog show in July. "Through the dog project, youth not only gain knowledge and skills while working with their dog, but they develop confidence, patience and responsibility for caring and training their dog," said Burrus.

The trainings impressed 4-H parent Sarah Sadler. "I thought the dog project class would be too advanced for my 7 and 8-year-old kids. Both my kids and their dogs proved me wrong. Not only have my kids, the dogs and I learned a tremendous amount, but these project meetings have provided my children with important learning opportunities on patience and persistence. It has been a true joy to watch their confidence and pride in ownership grow with each dog project class."

All Post Rock District 4-H members are encouraged to attend dog project meetings at the Osborne County Fairgrounds. No experience is required to take part. Upcoming dates are May 22, June 5 and June 12 at 3 p.m., and at 4 p.m., on July 3, 10, 17, and 24. Contact Kim Naber, 4-H Program Coordinator, at (785) 346-2521 or kimn@ksu. edu to learn more.
