Memorial Day services to honor veterans at area cemeteries

 


Special events are being planned thoroughout the area to mark the annual observance of Memorial Day.

In prepation for the big day the Nelson American Legion family scheduled cemetery clean-up and small flag placement for 5:30 Monday with an alternate date of Wednesday if weather conditions are not favorable on Monday. The Nelson post plans to place the larger flags at 7 a.m. and take them down at 5 p.m. on Memorial Day. Helpers with this activity are needed.

The post will hold ceremonies at the Nora Cemetery at 10 a.m. and the Nelson Cemetery at approximately 10:45 a.m. followed by a program at the downtown Veteran’s Plaza. Ceremonies will include a special guest speaker and a musical tribute.

The community is also invited to attend the meal provided by auxiliary members that will be served in the Legion meeting room immediately following the ceremonies. A short tribute will be given during the meal.

At Hardy, a program will start at 10 a.m. in the town hall. Built after the conclusion of WWI, the Hardy hall was to be a memorial to those who served their country during the first world war. It has since served as the Hardy community hall and school gymnasium.  Special music will be ‘This OLD Flag’ by Emma Koon. 

Legion Post Commander Andrew Miller will read the Honor Roll of Veterans and will give a patriotic presentation before the activity moves to the Hardy Cemetery where Taps will be played by Dylan Edwards and the Hardy Legionnaires will present a gun salute.

At Ruskin the Spring Creek Cemetery Memorial Day program starts at 1 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs.

Clay ‘Williams will deliver the Gettysburg Address, Beauford Hoyer will call the veterans roll, Legion Auxiliary members will preent poppies. Amanda Schultz and Iva Grahek will present a prayer and message.

The Webber Cemetery Memorial Day service is plan for 11 a.m. with lunch served at the service at the Webber church.

A Memorial Day Service will be held at Superior’s Evergreen Cemetery starting at 10 a.m. Monday in the east cemetery and finish in the west cemetery. Gale Mikkelsen will serve as master of ceremonies. Pastor Lori Kitzin will deliver the memorial address. Tributes will be delivered by Judy Meyer, Becky Caldwell, Kendra Lipker, Haley Coffey, and Maxine Rempe. Neah McMeen will sing the National Anthem. Rob Williams will play Taps. The American Legion color guard and the VFW Firing Squad will assist with the service.

The Lawrence American Legion Post will conduct memorial services on Monday starting at the Sacred Heart Cemtery at 9:15, St. Stephens at 9:35, Evergreen at 10:05, Rosemount at 10.25, and Oak Creek at 10:45. The procession to the cemetries will leave the Lawrence American Legion Hall at 9 a.m.

The public is also invited to attend a U.S. Flag Retirement setarting at 2 p.m. behind the American Legion Hall.
