Weather adding spice to life in the Heartland

Weather-wise it has been an unsettled week with thunderstorms in the forecast nearly every day. However much of this newspaper’s circulation area is still waiting for needed rain.

Through Tuesday morning, the storms were mostly blustery. The wind blew, lightning flashed, thunder boomed and the rain poured down for a short time.

Tuesday morning the National Weather Service reported the heaviest band of overnight rain stretched from Broken Bow to Superior. But it was a narrow band and not the widespread rain that is needed. Storm spotters report pivots overturned and power poles broken in the Campbell area.

Rainfall reports for the week ending Tuesday morning as submitted by volunteer observers to the CoCoRahs network included the following:

Nora 0.25, Lawrence 0.44, Hardy 0.49, Deweese 0.48, Nelson 0.45 and Superior 1.60.

But the week’s real story may have happened after this issue of The Express went to press. The National Weather Service expected a series of storms to travel from Wyoming to the southeast across Nebraska Tuesday evening and overnight with rainfall rates up to 2 inches per hour and accompanied by large hail and wind. Hopefully this area
