Sizzling temperatures for the Firekracker run
Firekracker run
July 7, 2022
The Superior Independence Day tradition of the Firekracker Run entered its 40th year Monday. Weather conditions were ideal. A clear sky, moderate temperature and a light, cooling breeze made for a perfect setting.
The number of entries for this year's race was down considerably from last year's 347 registrants.
It was an enthusiastic crowd of spectators who gathered to show their support for friends and family members. Entrants from as far away as Minnesota and Virginia entered the fray.
The race was established 40 years ago with a vision from Dr. Timothy Blecha, Elmer Rempe, Fred Meyers and Jim Miller to organize a holiday activity to appeal to all age groups and promote healthy exercise. The three remain active in the race organization to this day. Meyers serves as the master of ceremonies and the official starter as he has for 40 years. The Superior Joggers are the official race sponsors.
Watermelon and water were made available to runners at a table manned by Maxine Rempe, Mel Rempe and Nancy Meyers. Breakfast was offered by the Superior PEO chapter.
Entrants run in the one mile kids run, the one mile predict, the two mile and 10K run. The runners are divided in to age and gender groups. The oldest male runner in the race this year was 87 years old.
As the competitors drifted across the finish line, an electronic timing device read their bib number and recorded their time.
The post-race awards ceremony presented medals, trophies as well as cash and other prizes. The first prizes were awarded to participants in the kids race. Names were drawn and prizes, donated by local businesses, were awarded to the young runners. The adults were beneficiaries of cash and other items.
