Lawrence man loses life after ATV overturns

Lawrence EMTs kept busy

There has been a wide range of medical issues happening in the Lawrence area in recent weeks.

The first incident was a late night accident in Lawrence when Charles Himmelberg was riding a utility vehicle and while attempting a turn, the vehicle overturned, flipped and landed on Mr. Himmelberg. The Lawrence ambulance transported him to Mary Lanning Hospital and from there he was moved to an Omaha area hospital for care. He suffered severe head trauma, and did not survive the infection that accompanied it. He died Friday, at the Omaha hospital.

The second incident involved Gene Himmelberg. Gene had recently needed surgery and upon returning home a week or so ago, he stumbled on the grass in their front yard and fell. Later that evening he was experiencing a lot of discomfort. An ambulance transported him to Mary Lanning Hospital.

Mr. Himmelberg underwent surgery for a partial hip replacement and was in the hospital several days before returning home Friday.

Last Tuesday, the Lawrence and the Blue Hill ambulances responded to a two vehicle accident call on the Oak Creek cemetery curves northwest of Lawrence. A box truck and a mini-van collided and each ambulance service transported an injured person to Mary Lanning. The injured were not from the area and were not identified by name.

In other medical news, Brittney (Mrs. Keith) Faimon was advised to see a specialist at an Omaha hospital for the care of the triplets she is carrying. At the time, the babies were estimated to be 28 weeks old and are now around the 31 week mark with the hope she can carry them several more weeks before a possible delivery is planned.

One last note concerning the Lawrence Ambulance Service. If you saw the vehicles and personnel at the Lawrence Swimming pool last week, there was no medical emergency, the EMTs were giving lifesaving instructions and training to the swimming pool personnel.
