Darlene Medina

 


Darlene Helen Medina, 88,of Deshler, the daughter of Carl and Erna (Eilers) Hinz, was born on March 22, 1934, in Nelson. She died Thursday, June 30, at Tabitha Health Care Services in Lincoln, Neb.

Darlene grew up outside of Oak, on the Hinz family farm with her parents and eight siblings. She was united in marriage to Richard Medina on March 24, 1956, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hebron, by Msgr. Clarence Crowley. This union was blessed with the birth of seven children.

Darlene wore many hats in her lifetime, including working in a restaurant while living in Wichita Falls, Texas, Russell Stover candy in Lincoln, Neb., the broom factory in Deshler, being a foreman in welding at Reinke’s Manufacturing, and cleaning apartments in Omaha. She enjoyed playing cards with family, tending to plants and flowers, and liked animals. Darlene was also a fan of watching Husker football and volleyball on TV. She enjoyed cooking and baking for family meals and holidays and passed that on to her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; parents; infant daughter, Lisa Ann; brothers, Eldred, Raymond, James and LeRoy; and sisters Gertrude, Margie and Rose.

Darlene is survived by sons, David of Lincoln, Daniel of Dallas, Texas, and Gilbert of Deshler; daughters, Patricia Medina and LaVerne Starks of Lincoln, and Laura Medina of Brattleboro, Vt.; sister , Shirley Hinz of Lincoln; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.

Mass of the Christian Burial was at 10 a.m., Friday, July 8, at Sacred Heart Church in Hebron. Officiant was Father Steven Major.
